January 2026: New Edmond J. Safra affiliate: Dr. Saurav Mallik

Dr. Saurav Mallik is a faculty member in the School of Biochemistry, Neurobiology & Biophysics at the Faculty of Life Sciences and is joining the Edmond J. Safra Center as an affiliate.

Dr. Saurav Mallik received his PhD in computational biology from the University of Calcutta, India. Trained initially in physics as an undergraduate, he later transitioned to biology for his master's in molecular biology. For this doctoral work, he investigated how the evolution of protein complexes is coupled with their self-assembly pathways. He then moved to the Weizmann Institute of Science, for his postdoctoral work, focusing on how gene duplication drives the evolution of protein complexes.

Dr. Mallik's main research interests are the origin and evolution of protein complexes. He is focusing on complex origins, tracing how present-day multi-subunit complexes originated from simpler ancestral assemblies by incrementally integrating new subunits. He is also studying how ancestral multi-subunit heteromeric complexes have been simplified in highly specialized organisms, specifically intracellular symbionts and parasites, through gradual subunit loss.

Welcome aboard, Dr. Mallik!
