Inauguration Symposium

Inauguration of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics marked by joint symposium with Dan David Prize

On June 11, 2012 an international symposium on “The Human Genome and Future Biomedical Research” was held at Tel Aviv University. The symposium was organized by the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics, together with the Dan David Prize and the I-CORE on Gene Regulation in Complex Human Disease. On June 10, three international leaders of genome research, Prof. David Botstein (Princeton), Prof. Eric Lander (Harvard and MIT) and Dr. J. Craig Venter (J. Craig Venter Institute) were awarded the prestigious Dan David Prize for their contributions to genome research. The symposium was held to mark the awarding of the Dan David Prize and the inauguration of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics. The symposium included three talks. Prof. Botstein talked about "Evolution and Cancer," Dr. Venter gave a talk titled "From Reading to Writing the Genetic Code" and Prof. Lander spoke about "Secrets of the Human Genome." The talks were followed by a panel discussion with all the speakers. Nearly 600 students and faculty members from around Israel attended the symposium and completely filled the Bar Shira auditorium. The three talks were enthusiastically received by the audience. In addition, the three guests met individually with small groups of TAU students and faculty. The overwhelming response was that it was an inspiring and exceptional event. You can see and hear the talks by the Dan David Prize laureates posted online.
