November 2021: A new collaboration between Edmond J. Safra Center & Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center

A joint kickoff workshop of the Edmond J. Safra Center and clinicians at Sourasky Medical Center (SMC) took place on Friday November 19 2021.  The meeting was co-organized by the Edmond J. Safra Center and the I-Medata Center at SMC.

 

The goal of the workshop was to foster new collaborations between the two institutes. It was led by Prof. Noam Shomron, (Edmond J. Safra member, Medicine) Prof. Ron Shamir, (Edmond J. Safra Center head), Prof. Eli Sprecher (deputy director R&D, SMC), Dr. Ahuva Weiss-Meilik (head of I-Medata Center, SMC) and Dr. Michal Shevach (I-Medata).

The meeting brought together Some 45 clinical and computational researchers from both institutions for round table discussions. It started with brief introductions of Prof. Sprecher, Dr. Meilik on I-Medata, and Prof. Shamir on the Edmond J. Safra Center.  Prof. Shamir also announced the joint call of "Clinical Bioinformatics Research Grants" that will allow funding of joint research proposals of Edmond J. Safra PIs and clinicians at SMC, with a budget of up to 200K NIS per grant.

 

After the introduction, participants split into moderated round tables for topical discussions. The discussed topics were:

  • Cancer and genetics
  • Covid-19: bioinformatics and immuno-informatics
  • Women's health, perinatal and neonatal monitoring
  • AI & inflammation
  • Natural language processing in healthcare
  • Machine-learning based healthcare monitoring

 

The program included two rounds of discussions and a coffee break between them for informal interactions. Prof. Noam Shomron concluded the meeting.

 

The successful workshop was an opportunity to create new contacts between researchers and clinicians from the two institutes, and start discussions on collaborations and possible joint grant writing.
