December 2025: Burstein awarded ERC grant

Congratulations to Prof. David Burstein, Edmond J. Safra member (Life Sciences), who won the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant.

The ERC Consolidator Grant is a significant funding scheme, part of the Horizon Europe framework, that aims to support mid-career researchers in consolidating their independent research careers by strengthening their teams and fund ambitious and groundbreaking research projects.

Prof. Burstein's research combines bioinformatics and experimental approaches to study antibiotic resistance, CRISPR-Cas, and other microbial systems. His lab focuses on uncovering key interaction mechanisms within microbial communities and on promoting their application in biotechnology and medicine. By combining state-of-the-art machine learning, molecular biology, and metagenomic techniques, the lab deciphers key functions in the nexus of microbial interactions, including CRISPR-Cas, anti-CRISPR mechanisms, antibiotic resistance genes, and bacterial secretion systems.
