August 2019: Edmond J. Safra – UCLA partner in a summer program

Five bioinformatics graduate students, Oren Avram (Pupko lab, LS), Artem Danilevsky, Guy Shapira (Shomron lab, Medicine), Anton Levitan (Berman & Sharan labs, LS) and Itay Sason (Sharan lab, CS) participated in the Computational Genomics Summer Institute (CGSI) at UCLA on July 10th to Aug 2nd 2019. The students were supported jointly but the Edmond J. Safra Center and the CGSI.

The CGSI, now in its fourth year, brought together mathematical and computational scientists, sequencing technology developers from both industry and academia, and the biologists who use the instruments for particular research applications. The UCLA organizers, Profs. Eleazar Eskin and Eran Halperin, put together a meticulously orchestrated program with perfect balance of academic and social activities.

Dozens of researchers participated and lectured in the program. Graduate students had a unique opportunity to engage in a long and extensive scientific and social gathering with students and researchers from all over the world and to form collaborations and new friendships. The program included scientific talks, tutorials, affinity groups, tours, sport activities, picnics and a retreat in the mountains (Big Bear lake). Students stayed together in university housing, and had a great social experience as well.

The Edmond J. Safra students all applauded the CGSI as a great success. It facilitated multiply research discussions and interactions in a friendly and open atmosphere, and the informal interactions initiated new productive collaborations.
