The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a worldwide synthetic biology competition. Hundreds of groups from around the world participate and present novel ideas and solutions for key challenges in synthetic biology.

This year, a TAU team, led by Prof. Tamir Tuller, Edmond J. Safra member (Engineering), will participate in the competition for the second time. The team includes 12 excellent students from Engineering, Biology, Medicine, and Computer Science.

The team aims to develop a solution for the inherent instablity of synthetic genetic circuits. A common challenge in synthetic biology applications is strong selective pressure that leads to an evolutionary unstable genetic construct, ceasing to work after a short period. The team's solution is based on a 'smart' fusion of the target genes, composing the genetic circuit, with essential genes. To this end, they are developing a novel computational-experimental pipeline for choosing the relevant essential genes and designing the fusion.  The research is based on interdisciplinary techniques in synthetic biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, and engineering.

The Edmond J. Safra Center is one of the iGEM TAU team's supporters.
