The annual Edmond J. Safra Center’s fellowships and prizes ceremony took place on January 12 2023, at TAU.

The event was attended by TAU President, Prof. Ariel Porat, as well as Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Karen Avraham, Dean of Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. Abdussalam Azem, and Head of the School of Computer Science, Prof. Sivan Toledo. The guest of honor was Mr. Ariel Greenberg, the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation representative in Israel.  Mr. Greenberg greeted the students. Prof. Elhanan Borenstein, the head of the Center, summarized the Center's activities and accomplishments. Profs. Porat and Avraham greeted the audience.

This year's winners of the Edmond J. Safra Center Excellent Research Student Prize were PhD student fellows Sheri Harari (Stern lab, Life Sciences), Efrat Muller (Borenstein lab, Computer Science) and Uri Neri (Gophna lab, Life Sciences).  The prize is awarded annually to two or three research students with outstanding scientific record.

Edmond J. Safra PhD student fellow Dan Coster, gave an engaging talk titled "Precision Medicine".

A record number of 80 fellowships were awarded to excellent bioinformatics students in all degrees, including undergraduate and graduate students. Mr. Ariel Greenberg presented to each student a copy of the recently published biography of Mr. Edmond J. Safra, marking his extraordinary life as a banker and a philanthropist. This gesture was especially moving given the passing of Madam Lily Safra earlier this year, as was also highlighted in the President’s greeting and in Prof. Borenstein’s opening words.

All speakers further thanked Prof. Ron Shamir, who founded the Center and was headed it until a few months ago, for his outstanding accomplishments and vision. Prof. Shamir was also presented a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the Center’s student representatives.

The ceremony featured a musical break, during which the singer Noa Harel, a bachelor of the School of Music at TAU, performed a lovely song.
