October 2018: Kickoff workshop of Koret-Berkeley-TAU Initiative (KBT) at Berkeley

The kickoff workshop of the Koret - UC Berkeley - Tel Aviv University Initiative (KBT) in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics was held on October 9-11, 2018 in the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley.

The KBT Initiative is a new collaborative program between the Center for Computational Biology at UC Berkeley and the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics at Tel Aviv University.

The initiative will harness the complementary expertise and capabilities of the two universities in bioinformatics and computational biology to conduct novel research aimed at the development of computational methods and tools that integrate genetic, genomic and other patient data. Its ultimate goal will be to usher in a new era of truly personalized medicine.

The kickoff workshop's program brought together 27 senior researchers from UCB and TAU, including nine TAU researchers who flew to Berkeley especially for the workshop. The participants presented their research in diverse areas of computational biology and bioinformatics. The program was of very high quality and many discussions followed each talk. A social program allowed additional interactions and establishing of new partnerships.
The workshop and the intensive interactions fostered new collaborations, which are likely to develop and bear fruits during the course of the KBT imitative.
