April 2023: The 21st Israeli Bioinformatics Symposium – IBS 2023

The 21st Israeli Bioinformatics Symposium (IBS2023) took place on April 27 2023 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI).

IBS is the main annual conference of the Israeli bioinformatics community. Some 500 participants from all universities in Israel attended the conference. The symposium opened with a keynote by Prof. Elhanan Borenstein, Edmond J. Safra Center member (Computer Science & Medicine), who talked about computational approaches to study the gut microbiome. Another keynote speaker was Prof. Michal Linial, of the Hebrew University, who talked about tracking the evolutionary footprints on human health. The program included additional talks by bioinformatics faculty members, including a talk by Dr. David Burstein, Edmond J. Safra member (Life Sciences), a panel session titled "Medicine in the big data era" that was chaired by Prof. Nir Friedman of HUJI, a lively poster session, as well as special public lectures aimed for a non-professional audience.

The Edmond J. Safra Center supported the conference and also provided two prizes to students in the best poster competition.

Of the four prizes for best posters, one was awarded to Ella Goldschmidt, Edmond J. Safra MSc student fellow (Borenstein lab, Computer Science & Madi lab, Medicine) for her poster titled "Spatial transcriptomic analysis predicts cell type proportions in spots based on gene signatures". See more details on the posters and poster winners here.
