December 2021: The proteins in the corona virus that damage blood vessels

Prof. Roded Sharan, Edmond J. Safra member (Computer Science) and TAU colleagues identified the proteins in the corona virus that damage blood vessels and can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

In an article led by Dr. Ben Maoz (Engineering), published in the journal eLife, the researchers studied the damage to blood vessels during COVID-19 disease by measuring the impact of each SARS-COV2 protein on vascular permeability, and deriving the proteins and pathways that are involved in this process. The computational model for the study was developed by Rami Nasser, now Edmond J. Safra PhD fellow, and it agreed well with the experimental measurements. It allowed the researchers to predict the effect of each SARS-COV2 protein on other tissues and systems.
