Lecture title: "Interactive Extractive Search over Scientific Corpora: developing a search engine for biomedical knowledge extraction"

Time: Tuesday, 20 July 2021

12:00-12:45 LECTURE
12:45-13:00 Q&A

Abstract: Consider questions like "which genes have a documented LOF mutation?", "which polymers are water soluble?" or "which ligands bind which cell receptors". Scientific search engines like Google Scholar can identify papers relevant to these questions, but aggregating the relevant facts from the papers remains a tedious task. To address this limitation, we advocate for a new search paradigm called “extractive search” which combines document selection and fact extraction. In this meeting we'll demonstrate SPIKE, an extractive search system over scientific papers, and show how biomedical researchers can use it for tasks like hypothesis testing, literature review or ad-hoc knowledge base construction.

Organized by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and Prof. Noam Shomron

The the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, AI2, founded by Paul Allen and led by Dr. Oren Etzioni, seeks to achieve scientific breakthroughs by constructing AI systems with reasoning, learning, and reading capabilities.
