June 2019: Barbash speaks on the Entrepreneurs Salon
The third meeting of the Edmond J. Safra Biomedical Informatics Entrepreneurs Salon took place on June 4, 2019.
The third meeting of the Edmond J. Safra Biomedical Informatics Entrepreneurs Salon took place on June 4, 2019. Some 80 participants from industry, hospitals and academia gathered in the Jaglom Auditorium at TAU.
Prof. Noam Shomron, Edmond J. Safra Center member (Medicine) and the Chair of the Salon organizing committee, introduced the speaker, Prof. Gabi Barbash, Director of Bench to Bedside program at Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS), Founder and CEO of Consilium ltd and Former CEO of Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (1993-2015).
The speaker gave an exciting talk titled "Forward and backward in time: From big data to precision medicine". Prof. Barbash talked about the history of big data in the medical field and the major hurdles in the process of applying it in a clinical setting. He presented the collaboration between Clalit HMO and WIS in order to parse EMR information, and showed specific examples of how analysis of clinical big data was leveraged in order to better understand human diseases. Finally, he presented his vision of how data should be integrated in medicine towards a new revolution in patient care.
The talk was followed by a lively Q&A session and a reception, allowing interaction in an informal environment.
The Salon series, a new initiative of the Center, is a forum to promote entrepreneurship at the convergence of biology, medicine, and computing. It aims to create a meeting, interaction and networking forum for academics, industry, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists interested in joining together biology, medicine and computing. The series is a collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and the BIES series.
